Understanding Pick Up and Delivery Options

For pick up members, wine club release orders are placed in February for Q1, April for Q2, September for Q3, and November for Q4. Payments are processed two weeks following order placement. Wine selections in your release are guaranteed for two months after the release date. After that period, specific wines may no longer be available. If a wine becomes unavailable, the value you paid does not expire and will be applied as a credit toward wines that are available when you come to pick up.

For delivery members, release orders are placed in February, April, and November, with payments processed two weeks after order placement. Once the order is placed, you have two weeks to make updates to your wine selections. After payments are processed, changes can no longer be made. Shipping is subject to temperature considerations, and any holds on shipments follow UPS shipping recommendations to protect the quality of the wine.

For both pick-up and delivery members, the two-week window to update selections applies once the order is placed. This ensures clarity and consistency for all members.

Membership commitment is for one year with automatic renewal. Early cancellation is subject to a fifty-dollar fee, which helps support the planning and preparation that goes into each release.

Our 2021 Estate Wines!

We’ve released our 2021 Barbera to Club Members as an Estate Wine for the first time. You may recall our 2020 Barbera from this time last year. It was truly delicious and we are very proud of it. But even though it was made from the same grape from the same vineyard, it was not an Estate Bottled wine. For those who are interested, I explain below. Rest assured, this Barbera is amazing.

Our Club Members are also enjoying, for the first time, our 2021 Estate Bottled Merlot! This wine has been a labor of love and determination here at Oak Creek. Great respect to Adam and his team in the winery for this spectacular wine.

As many of you know, our vineyard has had some trying times in the last few years. These grapes grows at the top of the vineyard, exposed to the worst that mother nature can throw at them: wind, frost, drought, birds, rodents, terrible (for Merlot) soils! Over the last 3 years, we have completely rebuilt the irrigation, re-established proper organic fertilizers and pest controls, and are rebuilding the soils to be more resistant to drought and pests. This is our first, and we hope the beginning of many, vintages of amazing Merlots from our very own vineyards.

In honor of this event, and reflecting the newly designated Verde Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area), we have redesigned our Estate Labels. These new labels first reflect Nathalie’s desire for clean simple labels that reflect our simple straightforward approach to wine. Second, our desire to pay respect to our love for this place and its natural beauty and the bounty it provides. We are so grateful.

On our new labels you will see the profile of House Mountain in the back with our vineyards on its slopes, above Oak Creek at the bottom. Our estate is heavily impacted by the volcanic rock formations of House Mountain, limestone sediments from millennia of submerged sea beds followed by the alluvial soils of Oak Creek in the Verde Valley. Our label is designed to reflect all these influences.

Finally a note about “Estate Bottled Wine”. This is a legal term that can only be used when the grapes are grown, and vinted in the same AVA by a single winery. In 2021 we began managing the Hidden Hills Vineyard that grows our Barbera grapes. In addition, in 2021, the Verde Valley became an AVA, a region of significant viticultural importance.

Therefore, by satisfying those two requirements, the Barbera became an Estate wine for us. We control how the grapes are grown, what nutrients are used, when the grapes are picked, etc. Our Estate Merlot is grown at the top of the property. We then make these outstanding wines in our facility here on the property at Oak Creek, just 200 yards from the Tasting Room.

We are releasing these wines to you first, and hope you love them as much as we do!

Award Winning Wines!

We are so proud to officially have award winning wines here at Oak creek Vineyards & Winery! We recently participated in two separate international wine competitions. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and The San Diego International Wine and Spirits Challenge.

These are easily two of the most highly regarded and competitive events in the wine industry, with hundreds of wineries submitting wines from across the globe. Any level of recognition is definitely a feather in the cap of the wineries participating. That being said, we submitted our 2021 Select Sauvignon Blanc and our 2021 Sangiovese. The results were as follows.

2021 Select Sauvignon Blanc

San Francisco = Gold Medal

San Diego = Platinum Medal / Director’s Award Best in Class Sauvignon Blanc 94 points

From the first time we tasted this wine in the cellar we knew it was special. In our minds and experience this is the quintessential Sauvignon Blanc. From the bright acidity to the array of fruit notes this is as textbook of an expression of the varietal as it gets. To receive The Director’s Award in San Diego confirmed our suspicions that this is truly a world class wine. Best news is we still have some available to share and this wine will age beautifully for at least another 3 years. A trait this is uncommon for youthful and fresh white wines.

2021 Select Sangiovese

San Francisco = Bronze Medal

San Diego = Silver Medal

We are also extremely happy about the recognition for our Sangiovese because we did things a little differently with this wine. We decided to make the better wine rather than try to force it into the traditional framework of Sangiovese.

It carries such beautiful fruit notes and has enough substance to carry that fruit through the finish that we decided to forgo any kind of new oak barrel treatment of it. The thinking behind this was that the bold oak characteristics would bury the true beauty of this wine. To receive solid recognition for this “outside of the box” wine is truly a compliment of highest regard. Supplies are limited on this wine as well but there are still some cases/bottles available for purchase.

Most importantly, we could not have achieved any of this without the hard work of our Oak Creek Vineyards employees, from the cellar to the tasting room, and the continued support of our wine club members and customer base. It means everything to us and we are excited to continue making and sharing world class wines with you.

Irrigation

Fortunately, grapes require a relatively small amount of water and are generally drought tolerant compared to other crops. However, particularly up to the time of fruit set the health and vitality of the plants depends on adequate supplies of water. Healthy plants are more disease resistant and pest resistant. If they are properly supplied with water that complements their nutrient requirements, using chemical means to fertilize and control pests are minimized.

Weather Optimization: We are currently adding a weather station to help optimize our irrigation schedule. This will measure solar radiation and the amount of water being evaporated through he leaves of the vines to help us put the correct amount of water on the plants depending on the weather.
Irrigation Upgrade: We are upgrading our irrigation system on the property to ensure we deliver the desired amount of water to each of our plants. We use a drip system today which applies water directly to the plants, but every plant needs to get the correct amount depending on age and soil type in the vineyard.

Soil & Pest Management

In order to produce great grapes, we need to start with soil.

The Compost: Our soils have many of the nutrients required but are generally low in organic matter. We are improving the organic content through compost additions.
No Chemicals: A healthy balanced ecosystem minimizes infestations of pests. Predatory insects are our best defense against many pests. Chemical sprays will unbalance the ecosystem by killing pests and their predators indiscriminately and affecting our neighbors and Oak Creek which runs nearby. We are encouraged that we see relatively small numbers of pests and large populations of predatory insects. If it becomes necessary, we will spray with organic oils to control specific pests at specific times. It is never our intent to “carpet-bomb” the vineyard.

These are but a few examples of how we are attempting to live Earth Day every day. It is through small steps applied persistently and consistently that we will get just a little better every day. When we look back, we will recognize and celebrate how far we have come. In the spirit of Earth Day, if we all make these small improvements every day, we will all benefit from a healthier environment for us and our families.

This is the 51st Earth Day. The mission of Earth Day has always been to mobilize civil action to protect and restore our environment. You can read more about Earth Day 2021 here .

To me Earth Day reflects the ability of people to collectively engage to change the course of human impact. As humans, our sheer numbers imply that we will change the earth’s environment in many ways. We must adapt the way we live to minimize the damage we do every day by focusing on living and working in sustainable ways.

That is part of our Mission here at Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery. We are building a sustainable business that our families, neighbors, employees, members and customers are proud to be associated with for years to come.

For our business to be sustainable it must be productive, and we will take actions necessary to keep our employees employed and our customers satisfied while at the same time finding more cost-effective ways to reduce the resources we consume and limiting damaging wastes we create.

There are many challenges, but, taking a lesson from Earth Day by being focused and consistent and working together we can achieve these goals.

How it Applies to Us,

Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery is a small-scale grape farm, a wine producer, a direct-to-consumer retailer, and a retail tasting room all in one business. Each of these enterprises consumes resources and creates waste. What can we do to reduce our footprint? It’s a lot!

Garbage

We produce a lot of trash. We produce about 6 cubic yards of trash every week.

Reuse & Recycle: Everything we purchase is packaged, resulting in plastic, Styrofoam, and cardboard. While we recycle as much as possible, we are also saving many cardboard boxes and packing materials for reuse in our online and tasting room gift shop sales.
Reduce & Reuse: We are transitioning from plastic to cardboard inserts for our wine club shipments, eliminating about 1000 plastic inserts in each wine club release. We have also experimented with returnable packaging and with reusable wine carriers for our wine club pickups.
Eliminate the Short-Term: About 30% of all the bottles we purchase are emptied in the tasting room for use in wine tasting services on the premises then tossed in the recycle. Our plan is to move toward reusable kegs for the tasting room to eliminate this short-term use of bottles.
Composting: We compost organic food waste from the kitchen and from our employees. We also collect sheep manure from a neighboring farm and food waste from the local food bank to add to our compost heap. The composted materials are spread as mulch around our vines. This adds nitrogen, micro-nutrients and improves the acidity of our soils.

Irrigation

Weather Optimization: We are currently adding a weather station to help optimize our irrigation schedule. This will measure solar radiation and the amount of water being evaporated through he leaves of the vines to help us put the correct amount of water on the plants depending on the weather.
Irrigation Upgrade: We are upgrading our irrigation system on the property to ensure we deliver the desired amount of water to each of our plants. We use a drip system today which applies water directly to the plants, but every plant needs to get the correct amount depending on age and soil type in the vineyard.

Soil & Pest Management

In order to produce great grapes, we need to start with soil.

The Compost: Our soils have many of the nutrients required but are generally low in organic matter. We are improving the organic content through compost additions.
No Chemicals: A healthy balanced ecosystem minimizes infestations of pests. Predatory insects are our best defense against many pests. Chemical sprays will unbalance the ecosystem by killing pests and their predators indiscriminately and affecting our neighbors and Oak Creek which runs nearby. We are encouraged that we see relatively small numbers of pests and large populations of predatory insects. If it becomes necessary, we will spray with organic oils to control specific pests at specific times. It is never our intent to “carpet-bomb” the vineyard.

Spring is Springing

It’s a very busy time here Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery! Our grapes are waking from their winter nap; our team is preparing for a busy grape-growing season; we are continuing to make big improvements around the vineyard, and we are all finally shedding our yearlong COVID-19 inspired hibernation.

With the spring weather ranging from heavy frost and snow overnight to balmy shirtsleeves weather during the day we are anxious for the safety of our buds. We look forward to bud break any day, and alternately fear the buds will be damaged by freezing temperatures.

A major goal for us this year is to increase the productivity of our vineyards. One of the most important pieces of our plan is to establish the distinct nature of our own wines developed from the grapes grown on our property. To lead that effort, we have brought on a new vineyard manager. Dave has taken the challenge to get our vineyards producing so we can produce reasonable quantities of wine for us to share with you, our biggest fans.

We have been making regular inspections of the vines looking for signs of life. We expect bud break to occur any time in the next few days. The buds are fuzzy and expanding but have not yet broken. But we know it will be soon now that pests have returned to the vineyard. Weeds are growing, and insects are swarming. We are taking steps to control them while we continue to walk softly on our land. As I said to Dave the other day, “We would rather pull than poison” the weeds.

As some of you will have noticed or read about, we are installing a new well. This should give us a reliable water source for irrigating and supplying water to the tasting room, winery and residences. We had several occasions last year where we could not water the grapes nearly enough and we lost several almond trees. That definitely affected our grape production. We expect the new well to come online in the next couple of weeks, just in time for spring watering. We will do more rain-dancing in the meantime.

As we improve the availability of water, we are redesigning the plumbing and replacing many of the irrigation pipes to improve delivery of water to the grapes. We want to be able to tune the irrigation to specific parts of the vineyard to optimize watering. We have several different soil types and sun exposures, even varying row by row. This sometimes means we waste water in some places in order to get enough water to thirsty plants in other rows. So we are working to ensure we give each plant the amount of water it needs and no more.

Developing the vineyard to realize its potential is a long-term project. A journey of 100 miles starts with the first step. Watch for pictures on our social media sites and be prepared to celebrate the start of another vintage!

The First Year

It is amazing to note that Nathalie and I have now owned Oak Creek Vineyards & Winery for a whole year! It has been a year of challenges and opportunities, successes and lessons. It has also been a year of development of our plans that make us so excited about the upcoming years. I wish to take the opportunity of our anniversary to share what you can expect over the next year.

Obviously, we will never think about 2020 without thinking about the challenges of COVID-19. We were open only three weeks before having to close. We thank our staff and our customers for being patient with us and keeping us all safe.

We were also challenged by the weather. Again, this year we had negligible monsoon rains coupled with very high temperatures. Our winter rains have been disappointing so far but maybe over the next couple of weeks we will see some relief. We hope for more cooperation from Mother Nature this year!

Of course, we have been working to advance the wine program. During this year we will be redoubling our efforts to produce wines from our grapes here at Oak Creek Vineyards. Over the next few months, we are excited to be introducing the first of these wines.

We are also planning improvements around the tasting room. The planning has started. We love our outdoor patio and hopefully the new cover, misters and lights has improved your experience. We have introduced a regular music program, and plan to add even more variety this year. We intend that we will make even more dramatic changes to the tasting room and patio over the next year. We’ll keep you up to date on our thinking.

There are so many things we want to share with you about where we are going. It was always our intention to communicate with you frequently to share our adventure with you. That is perhaps the biggest “what I wanted to do but did not get done” from our first year. We will strive for better!

We Bought a Vineyard!

On February 24th, 2020, we took ownership of Oak Creek Vineyards and Winery. We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves and let you know what we have in mind for the future of our new home.

We are recent transplants to Arizona, having moved to Scottsdale to follow Nathalie’s career in Human Resources at a local software company. We have just celebrated 2 years in the Valley of the Sun. We lived for several years in another valley, Silicon Valley, on the doorstep of wine country and developed a love for the small, local, family-owned wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, and Sonoma County. It is through our appreciation for the passion of these craftspeople that our own dreams evolved.

It is this desire to develop great wines in a family atmosphere that brought us to Oak Creek Vineyards and Winery. We see this as an opportunity to connect with the Arizona Wine community, a small but passionate group of innovators, explorers and craftspeople growing grapes in a challenging and surprising place. Arizonans have shown support for these adventures and we look forward to this challenge.

We also look forward to sharing our passion for wine and the wine lifestyle. We believe Wine is not just a beverage but an experience. Wine is the most social of drinks. When people want to connect, they generally do so over a glass of wine. A nice bottle of wine is the usual feature of any date night.

And of course, wine has an intimate connection with our environment. We farm grapes, in harmony with our surroundings, trying to leave a small footprint, and creating a lifestyle that can survive the challenges of our climate, today and in the future. In the process we produce a product with starkly simple ingredients.

Over time we will make improvements throughout the business. Nathalie and I are evolutionary not revolutionary. Every change we make will be with a focus on improving our grapes, our wines, and our relationship with you, our new friends. We intend to improve our customer service in the tasting room. If you visited us in the last few weeks, you may have seen some of these changes.

We are working hard to improve the vineyard with a focus on improving our grape harvest. Because we want to engage you in our passion for wine making, we intend to keep you up to date on our activities in the vineyard and the winery as our adventure continues.
